After three years in Pilothead Sound, Cass believes he's finally found his version of "domestic guy bliss" as he pursues a long-delayed love of the culinary arts. However, an introduction to Auguste des Anges, "the man who sees angels," throws him a curve-ball in the form of a vintage journal he and Lawrie discover concealed in a painting. The contents of the journal bear disturbing confirmation that the less savory legends of the Quad and Anglehorn are alas all too real, leading to a life-threatening situation with Kippie and her friends as they decide to explore the underground's tunnels and its as-yet unidentified residents. Abel meanwhile has a spiritual encounter with a youth from Tumac's village, where Evito and Tia have fled with warnings of growing dangers in E-Etrusca; this encounter reenforces the reality of the Deliverer legend to the cynical young warrior, whose discovery of a mysterious buried city near the village raises more questions than it answers. Mary Beth and Akele discover an antique medical logbook which contains intriguing clues to the origins of the Deliverer's mysteriously interrupted yet timely lineage, and Papi and Paolo's Aunt Roni provides chilling details which fill in more gaps in the legend which suddenly begins to seem quite feasible. The separate storylines with Cass, Lawrie and Abel draw closer together with similar happenings a continent away, reenforcing the truth that in their circumstances, at least, there is no such thing as coincidence, and everything happens for a reason whether in the hidden village of Waraq (Sunrise), the ancient citadel of E-Etrusca, or the faraway tourist town of Pilothead Sound.

C. S. Walkingheart has done it again. His amazing illustrations and wonderful story are only exceeded by his ability to make his characters well developed and believable.

I had been waiting anxiously for this third book in his series to come out so that I could continue my friendship with Cass and Lawrie and their friends and it did not disappoint.

Now I am anxiously waiting for the fourth installment in this series. I am sure it will be equally up to the task of entertaining and immersing me in the stories of Pilothead Sound.

I would recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who loves books that are adventurous and mysterious and full of characters with whom the reader can fall in love. C. S. Walkingheart writes a story equal to anything Jean Auel or Diana Gabaldon or even James Michener has written.

Kudos to Mr. Walkingheart for another book well done and illustrations that are absolutely beautiful in their own right.

One word of warning however - Don't start reading this book unless you have time to sit with it to the end, because once you start - you Will Not be able to put it down.

NightTrails Through Pilothead Sound The Days of Pilothead Sound DOPS C S Walkingheart 9781482351545 Books Reviews

Night Trails Through Pilothead Sound is well named, for it is a dark and frightening book in which many carefully woven threads come together. Some mysteries are revealed, while others only deepen further.

Volume 2 begins with far less peace and harmony than have the previous books - with Cass and Gus at odds, and the return of the curious and evil seeming creature from Todd and Annie's barn whose appearance disturbs everyone present, especially Cato. This is only the beginning in terms of evil creatures, as both Tia and Evito in South American and Kippie in the Sound find themselves down tunnels, and possibly in great danger. These are some of the most exciting scenes in the series so far. I was on the edge of my seat throughout, completely terrified but also unable to stop reading. The author unfolds these complex sequences with imagery and action that is almost cinematic. I can't rave enough about how entertaining this was to read.

One of the things I love most about this book, aside from the adventure, is the fact that the characters are always changing, and we the audience are always getting little intimate glimpses into their lives and thoughts. One of my favorite characters has always been Cato, and in this book we get a little more information about who he is and why, and in a scene that I thought was really moving, we learn a great deal about Cato's relationship with his enigmatic father. I've always said that the characters feel like old friends, but moments like these give a genuine sense of an interactive, slowly unfolding, evolving relationship richer and more realistic than any I have experienced with other books, including other complex series like Harry Potter or Anne Rice's Vampire series.

Meanwhile, the story of Abel, Devon, and Eydie continues develop, and here too there is a sense of growing unease surrounding a group of somewhat unwelcome passengers on the Claire Du Monde, whose motivations and purpose will not become clear until the end of the book, in one of the most clever and surprising reveal scenes I have ever read.

Throughout these pages we get the same brilliant illustrations seen in the previous two books which add a wonderful layer to an already wonderful story. I'm so excited to keep reading!!!
Note This review was written after reading DOPS3 in its two-part kindle version. I have combined the two parts here for the single volume paperback review.

Part 1
I can now safely say that this is my absolute favorite series. The Dogs of Pilothead Sound continues to be thrilling, beautifully written, completely transporting, and full of wonderfully complex and believable characters, some of whom I truly think of as old friends.

Book 3 - Night Trails Through Pilothead Sound opens with Volume 1, in which the little community of friends surrounding the familiar Cass and Lawrie seem to be relatively at peace. The loveable Mario has made huge and important changes, and has brought a communal space for friendship and support to the people of the Sound.

From there, things take a turn, with a growing sense of foreboding regarding the strange happenings that have plagued The Sound since Cass and Lawrie's arrival. Cass, to Lawrie's chagrin, isn't ready to accept facts at face value, and he's not the only one as Cato joins in the search. The answers are complex and slow to come, relating as always to an incredible mixture of sources folklore and legend, religious theory and spiritual truth, whispers of a Seawall Coven, and a very real network of underground tunnels. At this stage we encounter the riveting mystery of the Yellow Poppy Journal, and get our first introduction to Shemuel - an angel who walks among our characters, but who can only be seen by a select few. There are many stories around that deal with the subject of angels and demons, but I've never seen the concept addressed so intelligently or so elegantly. Regardless of your religious persuasion, this aspect of the series is bound to fascinate. It was one of my favorite discoveries, and I really hope to see more.

In the midst of all this mystery and legend, we still have the comfort of food and friendship, as Cass and Lawrie continue to make a happy home together. I particularly loved the evolving situation between Cass and Gaston, and between Jon and Cato - two relationships with aspects to which we can all relate, and from which I personally gained great solace, comfort, and insight.

On the ocean Abel continues to captain the Claire Du Monde, and finally there is a brief moment of connection between Abel and The Sound - a connection which was thrilling to read, beautifully written, and characteristically satisfying yet maddening. The sensation of inextricable linkage between Abel and Cass & Co. has been building slowly and carefully, and I can't wait for its conclusion.

Meanwhile, south of The Sound, Tia and Evito continue their travels through the jungle, while Akele and Mary Beth wait for the next chapter in their more confined journey. Outside the walls of their prison we meet Two Nose Six Toes - my favorite (and ugliest!) canine friend to date. In the end, Mary Beth and Akele are asking many of the questions that we, the readers, desperately want answered, and in the final pages we come closer to comprehending the grander design of things than ever before.

As always, this is a gripping page turner, an amazing adventure, and a soul soothing journey through jungles and over oceans; in the realms of waking life, and of dreaming.
